This striking figure is none other than a giant pigeon, carrying a profound message about legacy, perception, and the future. Created by artist Iván Argote, the 16-foot sculpture titled “Dinosaur” watches over the bustling streets from its perch atop the High Line. “For nearly 20 years, I’ve been exploring various dynamics in public spaces and how we connect with one another and our urban environment,” Argote shared. “I’ve devoted a lot of time to examining the meaning and symbolism behind monuments. Throughout my journey, pigeons have consistently been a focal point. I’ve produced several videos featuring them and delved into their unique demeanor and our peculiar relationship with these birds.”
When contemplating a proposal for the High Line Plinth, Argote decided it would be intriguing to center a pigeon in this creative endeavor. “With this piece, I aimed to provoke thoughts about our connection with other species in the city, issues of marginality, and what a significant monument for New York in the 21st century might resemble,” he explains. “Pigeons are remarkably intelligent; they possess a quirky charm and impressive skills. Their navigation abilities are akin to having GPS—they are devoted and adaptable creatures. There are countless videos online showcasing their remarkable feats, making them a true source of inspiration.”
