Comedian Ashley Hesseltine, creator of the Instagram account ‘Bros Being Basic’, understands the irony surrounding the concept of being ‘basic’. Originally an elitist insult mocking middle-class, basic white girls who unquestioningly followed mainstream trends, the term has since evolved as more people became acquainted with it.
Over time, women who enjoy pumpkin lattes, pouty selfies on Instagram, leggings, and other things associated with being mainstream, decided to embrace their basicness without shame. Since one of the defining aspects of being basic is not realizing it, this self-awareness neutralized the insult. After all, why should anyone be judged for their preferences?
