For many young women, homecoming celebrations are an exciting time – from choosing the perfect dress to catching up with old friends. However, this year’s ceremony at Southside High School, Alabama was particularly memorable for 17-year-old Sara Kate, who was crowned as the homecoming queen.
Despite living with cancer for seven years, Brett was able to escort his daughter across a football field as she received her homecoming queen crown
Escorted by her father, a radiant 17-year-old was crowned homecoming queen at Southside High School, Alabama. However, the moment was even more special as her father has been battling esophageal cancer for seven years. Despite his health challenges, the tenacious 47-year-old was determined to walk his daughter across the football field to receive her crown and flower bouquet. Brett’s wife, Carrie Yancey, shared that Brett had struggled to even pick up his left leg the week before, making the walk a major ordeal.
“I could feel my heart beating out of my chest,” Brett’s wife, Carrie, said of the special moment
Thankfully, the special night was unforgettable for all the right reasons. Carrie, who has been married to Brett for 25 years, watched from the bleachers as her husband and daughter shared a tender embrace, a moment that brought tears to her eyes. She recalls feeling her heart beating out of her chest and praying that Brett could make it across the field to share the special moment with their daughter.
Given Brett’s feeble condition, his wife feared that he wouldn’t be able to make the 50-yard walk across the field
“Brett is so proud of what all our children stand for and the young ladies they’ve become”
Brett’s medical treatment requires constant travel, causing him and his wife to miss out on many important events in their daughters’ lives. Despite this, the couple remains grateful for their community, friends, and family who have been a constant source of support, keeping Brett in their prayers. Carrie shared that their three daughters have kept the faith, even during difficult times.
The family’s wish is for Brett’s legacy to be one of “hope, courage, strength, and faith”
